Johnson Asiedu Nektia lights the perpetual flame with Dr. Zenator Rawlings

The 46th anniversary of Ghana’s June 4 Uprising was solemnly commemorated today in Agomanya, Eastern Region, with a gathering of National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwarts, supporters and the family of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Despite intermittent drizzles, the event proceeded with fervent dedication to the principles of probity, accountability and social justice that underpinned the 1979 revolution.

NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia led the ceremony, joined by Rawlings’ children, including Kimathi Rawlings and Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings. Together, they ignited the perpetual flame, which symbolizes the spirit of the uprising.

The June 4 Uprising, led by then Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, was a pivotal moment in Ghana’s history, resulting in the overthrow of the Supreme Military Council and setting the stage for the country’s return to civilian rule. The annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical leadership and civic responsibility.

Attendees at the Agomanya event included NDC executives, party members and citizens who gathered to reflect on the revolution’s impact and reaffirm their commitment to its guiding principles. The ceremony featured speeches, cultural performances, and wreath-laying to honor those who lost their lives during the uprising.

As the nation reflects on this significant chapter in its history, the call to uphold the values of the June 4 Uprising remains ever pertinent, serving as a beacon for current and future generations.
