Video: Galamsey and the Bui Power Plant; illegal mining threatens dam's future

In JoyNews’ recent Hotline documentary, award-winning environmental journalist Nana Yaw delves into how small-scale illegal mining is threatening the Bui Power Plant.

The documentary, which officially aired on Monday, January 19, explores the activities of the illegal mining menace along the lake, the threats it poses to the power plant, and the measures stakeholders are taking to address it.

The documentary also revealed how illegal settlements have been established in the forest, with residents encroaching on the banks of the plant to carry out their activities.

Watch the full documentary below.

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) was established under the Bui Power Authority Act 740 of 2007, with a mandate to plan, execute, and manage the Bui Hydroelectric Project, now known as the Bui Generating Station (BGS).

This mandate was broadened through the Bui Power Authority (Amendment) Act 2020 (Act 1046), granting BPA the authority to develop renewable and other clean energy solutions in Ghana, in line with the government’s target of increasing renewable energy penetration by 10% by 2030.
