Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to human dignity and social responsibility, following donations made to the Ankaful Prison and the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Coast.
In a post on Saturday, January 10, the Vice President said the gesture forms part of a long-standing annual tradition of giving back, aimed at supporting the welfare of vulnerable groups and frontline workers.

The donations were made on her behalf by a team led by Presidential Staffer Kakra Yalley.
According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the support to Ankaful Prison underscores the belief that every Ghanaian, regardless of circumstance, deserves to be treated with dignity and humanity.

She described prisons as institutions of correction and rehabilitation, stressing that meeting the basic welfare needs of inmates is essential to reform, discipline, and successful reintegration into society.
She commended the leadership and staff of the Ghana Prisons Service at Ankaful for their dedication and professionalism, despite the challenging conditions under which they operate, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to initiatives that strengthen the country’s correctional system.

In the same spirit, a separate donation was made to the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital to support the care and welfare of patients and frontline caregivers.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the support reflects an ongoing commitment to institutions that serve some of the most vulnerable members of society.
She stated that strengthening mental health facilities is critical to reducing stigma and improving access to quality mental health services across the country, and expressed appreciation to the health professionals and caregivers at the hospital for their selfless service.

The Vice President reiterated the government’s resolve to continue advocating for stronger social protection and mental health support systems nationwide.
