Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emphasized the need for professional management to maintain the pitches at Ghana’s five major stadia.
Addressing the media on August 25 in Accra, Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), highlighted concerns raised by the Black Stars regarding the poor quality of the country’s football pitches.
During a recent meeting with the national team in Kumasi, Bawumia learned firsthand from the coach and players about the critical need for international-standard playing surfaces.
In response, he has included a plan for pitch improvement in the NPP’s political manifesto.
The plan advocates for professional stadia management, training of local staff, and the involvement of experts to enhance pitch quality and maintenance.
“One of our problems is the lack of maintenance of our pitches,” Bawumia said.
“The Black Stars expressed a clear need for international standard pitches.
This is why it is a critical component of our manifesto—to ensure we have pitches that meet international standards.”
The call for better pitch maintenance comes ahead of a significant match for the Black Stars.
The team is set to host Angola on September 5 in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
However, concerns about the stadium’s readiness have been raised, with the facility currently in poor condition just 11 days before the game.
In June, Thomas Partey, the Black Stars’Stars deputy captain, communicated to Bawumia about improving stadium conditions to enhance the team’s performance.
This feedback was given during a visit by the Vice President ahead of the Black Stars’ 4-3 victory over the Central African Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The push for upgraded pitch management aims to address the ongoing issues and ensure that Ghana’s football infrastructure meets the demands of international competitions.
