Vice President applauds NHIA for 2025 gains, urges stronger public education on health insurance

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has praised the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for what she describes as significant progress made in strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in 2025.

Her remarks followed a courtesy call by members of the NHIA Board and Executive Management, led by Board Member Dr. Divine Ndonbi Banyubala, to brief her on key achievements for the year and outcomes from the recently held NHIA High-Level Stakeholder Conference.

Briefing the Vice President, the NHIA Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Operations, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, who represented the Chief Executive, outlined the Authority’s major gains, ongoing reforms, and stakeholder feedback from the conference.

The Vice President expressed satisfaction with the surge in active NHIS membership, which has now exceeded 20 million.

She encouraged the Authority to intensify public education, especially in underserved and hard-to-reach areas, to bring more uninsured Ghanaians onto the Scheme.

She also underscored the importance of preventive healthcare as the country advances towards the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) agenda.

Touching on private-sector participation, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged Roche, a key sponsor of the stakeholder conference, to support local capacity building by training more Ghanaian health professionals.

She further indicated her willingness, subject to her schedule, to join the Health Minister in announcing the reviewed NHIS service tariffs, and called on the NHIA to begin broad public sensitisation ahead of the announcement.

This, she stressed, should include education on ongoing efforts to curb illegal payments at health facilities.

Senior Aide to the Vice President, Ofosu Ampofo, also emphasised the importance of proactive communication, urging the NHIA to “tell the NHIS story” by highlighting the progress made under recent reforms and their impact on service delivery and the Scheme’s financial health.
