The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued a strong statement condemning the growing trend of individuals acquiring and parading honorary doctorate degrees and fraudulent academic qualifications from unaccredited or questionable institutions.
In a press release issued on Monday, June 30, UTAG expressed grave concern over the increasing abuse and misrepresentation of such titles, particularly when used for professional gain, public deception, and influence peddling.
“These actions not only trivialise the rigorous scholarly processes associated with legitimate academic qualifications but also erode public trust in higher education and its regulatory institutions,” the statement read.
UTAG reaffirmed its support for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in its regulatory efforts, including sanctions and legal action where necessary, against individuals and organisations involved in the proliferation of fake academic titles.

The association praised GTEC’s recent public stance and actions and called on it to intensify its efforts.
The association also called on public institutions, civil society organisations, and the media to verify academic credentials before offering platforms or recognition, and advised the general public to treat with scepticism any self-styled “doctorates” or “professorships” not conferred through accredited academic processes.
In addition, UTAG appealed to the Ministry of Education and GTEC to enhance public education on the meaning and limits of honorary degrees and called on universities to implement clear internal policies on awarding such honours.
“Academic titles must be earned, not purchased,” UTAG asserted. “Their use must reflect the high standards of scholarship and service they represent.”
The association reaffirmed its commitment to working with GTEC and other stakeholders to uphold the credibility of Ghana’s academic institutions and preserve the integrity of the knowledge society.
