The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim in the Eastern Region, Fredrick Obeng Adom, has cut sod for a rural telephony site at Asuokaw.

Communities like Owurakesim, Kofikyere, Keteyensua, Nkorkor and Winan will all benefit from the project when completed.

The sod cutting took place on Friday, May 19.

According to the MP, this will improve telephone services within the community and the constituency as a whole.

Addressing the gathering at Asuokaw, Mr Obeng Adom promised to ensure its completion in the shortest possible time.

“I promise to ensure it is completed in earnest for the benefit of all of us,” Mr Adom said.

Present at the ceremony was Barima Kwame Ofori II, Chief of Asuokaw, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Eugene sackey, the New Patriotic Party’s Constituency Secretary, Rahman Ganiyu, the party’s Constituency Elections Officer, Magid Nurudeen and the Constituency’s Assistant Secretary, Osafo Abednego.

Fredrick Obeng Adom lobbied for the project from the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, GIFEC.

Officials of GIFEC were also present to ensure that the necessary materials and equipment needed for the immediate commencement of the project were delivered.

Meanwhile, the government has said that it will by the end of this year, complete the construction of some 560 rural telephony sites under the Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project to extend basic voice and data connectivity to underserved and unserved communities across Ghana.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, who made this known said 1,008 rural sites under the project, had already been constructed nationwide between 2020 and 2022.

The government, she added, hoped to complete the remaining projects as soon as practicable.

“We are optimistic that out of the 1,008 remaining sites to be completed, 560 rural sites will be completed by the end of this year,” she said.

The Minister said this in a speech read on her behalf by Madam Ama Pomaa Boateng, the Deputy Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, at the celebration of the 2023 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) on Wednesday, organised by the Ministry and the National Communication Authority (NCA).
