The United Nations in Ghana has officially launched the UN@80 Youth Innovation Challenge, a bold and inspiring initiative inviting young Ghanaians to lead with innovative ideas that have the potential to transform their communities and the world at large.

This challenge is part of the UN’s commemoration of 80 years of global cooperation and progress, with a strong focus on placing youth at the centre of shaping the future.

In a statement released, the United Nations declared, “This is a bold call for young Ghanaians to lead with ideas that can transform their communities and the world.”

The nationwide competition calls on young people aged 15 to 35 to design creative, technology-driven, or policy-based solutions that address pressing global and national challenges.

Under the theme, “Shaping Tomorrow Together: Youth-Led Innovations in Multilateralism — Celebrating UN@80”, the initiative aims to empower the next generation to actively shape the future of global cooperation, advance UN reforms, and promote inclusive governance. The challenge is hosted on the official Unite Ideas Platform, described as “a platform that engages people and organisations to develop open source solutions for social good”.

The organisers urge young innovators to “submit practical solutions that support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promote meaningful youth participation in decision-making, and foster collaboration, creativity, and advocacy.”

Highlighting the key focus areas, the organisers stated:
“Key focus areas include food systems; energy access and affordability; digital connectivity; education; jobs and social protection; and climate change, biodiversity, and pollution.”

Encouraging diversity and creativity in submissions, the statement added:
“Entries may take various forms, including mobile applications, digital tools, policy briefs, awareness campaigns, or community-led projects. Submissions can be made individually or in teams of up to five members.”

On the importance of the initiative, United Nations National Information Officer Ms Cynthia Prah underscored the critical role of youth: “Young people are not just the future — they are the present. This challenge is a testament to the UN’s commitment to listen to their voices, invest in their ideas, and work together towards a fairer, more sustainable world.”

To participate, eligible youth are invited to submit their ideas through the Unite Ideas Platform by July 30, 2025.

The statement concluded, “We look forward to seeing innovative ideas that will drive sustainable change and empower Ghana’s youth to shape a better future for all.”
