The Ministry of Health has received modern midwifery training equipment, simulation models, and family planning commodities from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to boost maternal health and reproductive care across the country.
The items, valued at nearly GH₵40 million, form part of UNFPA’s long-standing partnership with Ghana to strengthen midwifery education and reduce maternal deaths.
UNFPA Country Representative, Dr Wilfred Ochan, said the support was aimed at improving hands-on training for midwives and expanding access to reproductive health services.
He explained that the investment “will enhance practical training for midwives, increase access to family planning, and contribute to reducing maternal mortality nationwide.”
Receiving the equipment on behalf of the Ministry, Deputy Minister for Health, Prof Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, expressed appreciation to UNFPA for its continued commitment to improving maternal health.
She said the new resources would “significantly raise the quality of midwifery training across Ghana.”
The UNFPA Country Representative noted that UNFPA’s work continues to make a measurable impact. Dr Ochan said more than one million couples have received UNFPA-supplied contraceptives this year, adding that the availability of these products has helped prevent unintended pregnancies and “saved hundreds of lives.”
Prof Ayensu-Danquah stressed that institutions benefiting from the equipment must use them strictly for skills training and maintain high standards of accountability.
She added that the investment would support the Ministry’s efforts to build a stronger midwifery workforce and deliver better care for mothers and newborns as Ghana works towards universal health coverage.
