UK Alumni in Ghana honoured for driving change as British Council launches new mentorship council

The British Council Ghana has celebrated some of the country’s most influential UK-educated professionals for their impact on national development while launching a new initiative to deepen alumni engagement and mentorship.

Held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the British Council premises in Accra, the event – “Alumni UK Connect: Celebrating Impact, Driving Change” – highlighted the contributions of UK university alumni to Ghana’s socio-economic progress across sectors such as health, education, entrepreneurship, technology, and civic leadership.

The gathering also marked the official launch of the Alumni UK Mentorship & Engagement Council (MEC) – a volunteer advisory group that will champion alumni-led initiatives, foster mentorship, and expand the reach of the Alumni UK platform in Ghana.

In his opening remarks, a representative of the British Council underscored the importance of maintaining strong global networks, noting that “UK alumni play a vital role in fostering bilateral relations and driving development in their home countries.”

A panel discussion themed “Leading with Impact: Alumni Driving Change in Ghana” featured success stories from alumni who are transforming their communities with skills and networks acquired during their time in the UK.

The MEC, formally introduced during the programme, will serve as a key structure for mentoring aspiring leaders and connecting alumni with opportunities to give back. A public call for mentors was also announced, encouraging more UK-educated Ghanaians to join the initiative and support the next generation of change-makers.

According to data from Universities UK International, 88% of international UK alumni plan to visit the UK again as tourists, 80% would recommend studying in the UK, and 77% are more likely to do business with the UK – statistics that underline the strategic importance of the Alumni UK network.

The event forms part of the British Council’s broader efforts to grow alumni registration on the Alumni UK global platform and strengthen professional and academic connections between Ghana and the United Kingdom.
