UGMC, HR Director honoured for excellence in healthcare workforce leadership

The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has been named the Best Human Resource Management Organisation in Healthcare at the 2025 Human Resource (HR) Focus Africa Awards, reaffirming its leadership in strategic workforce development and culture transformation within the healthcare sector.

In a double honour, UGMC’s Director of Human Resources, Mr Francis Kyereboah, was also recognised as First Finalist for HR Practitioner of the Year, highlighting his pivotal role in transforming the centre’s workforce systems and HR operations.

Since its inception in 2018, UGMC has evolved into a world-class academic medical facility by recruiting highly skilled and diligent professionals who continue to set new standards in healthcare delivery in Ghana and across Africa.

Mr Kyereboah described the awards as both humbling and inspiring.

“These honours affirm the transformative journey we’ve embarked on at UGMC to place people at the heart of healthcare delivery,” he said, dedicating the recognition to the staff and clients of the Medical Centre.

Under his leadership, UGMC has expanded its workforce from 120 employees in 2018 to over 1,900, introduced a comprehensive Conditions of Service Manual, and implemented several staff welfare initiatives, including wellness programmes, professional development schemes, and mental health support.

The centre has also sponsored 332 employees for specialist training and doubled the number of specialist doctors from 46 in 2021 to 88 by mid-2025, as part of broader efforts to enhance skills and meet the evolving demands of modern healthcare.

UGMC has further hosted more than 2,300 student interns and 800 National Service personnel, providing valuable practical learning opportunities and creating a pipeline of professionals for Ghana’s healthcare system.

Mr Kyereboah said these achievements — which formed the basis for the awards — were the result of the hard work and dedication of UGMC’s staff and management.

“Their commitment and pursuit of excellence have made our HR vision a reality every single day, leading to the many recognitions we have received,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Mr Kyereboah said the double honours would motivate the HR Directorate and the wider workforce to deepen their commitment to strategic human resource development by continuously raising the bar in world-class patient care, training, and research.

“On behalf of UGMC, we pledge to continue building a healthcare workforce that delivers compassionate, innovative, and globally competitive care, training, and research,” he affirmed.

Beyond UGMC, Mr Kyereboah has contributed significantly to national HR policy development. He has served as a World Health Organization (WHO) advisor and led several major consultancy projects across Ghana’s health sector.

Earlier in his career, he played a key role in deploying the iHRIS system across 306 health facilities and helped expand the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) workforce from 8,000 to nearly 22,000 within five years.
