UG 1993 year group donates 10 brand-new laptops to support students’ digital access

The 1993 Year Group of the University of Ghana (UG93) has donated 10 brand-new laptops to the University as part of its 32nd homecoming celebration, supporting the Vice-Chancellor’s One Student, One Laptop initiative aimed at expanding digital access among students.

Presenting the laptops on behalf of the year group, UG93 President, Mrs. Margaret Donkor described the group as “pacesetters,” noting that their philanthropic tradition dates back decades. She recalled the group’s support to the University Hospital with donations exceeding GH₵95,000 to mark their 30th anniversary. She added that this year’s contribution aligns with the Vice-Chancellor’s efforts to strengthen digital inclusion.

Welcoming the kind gesture, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, expressed gratitude to the UG93 Year Group for supporting what she described as the University’s overarching strategic priorities, which include providing a transformative student experience, promoting impactful research, committing to the development of faculty and staff, promoting engagement and partnerships, and ensuring sustainable resource mobilisation and stewardship. She assured the group that the laptops “will reach the right hands” and commended them for maintaining a long-standing culture of giving back

The Chairperson of the ‘One Student, One Laptop’ Implementation Committee, Prof. Peter Quartey, underscored the programme’s critical role in helping students compete in a rapidly digitising global environment. “So far, we have received 956 laptops and 645 have already been distributed,” he said. He added that the selection process is transparent and prioritises students in need, with grades and CGPA forming the basis for selection.

In brief remarks, Vice-President of the UG93 Year Group, Prof. Cynthia Akwei, outlined activities planned for the homecoming weekend, scheduled from Friday December 4 to Saturday December 5, 2025, under the theme, “Back to Basics: Towards Continuing Good Health.” The programme begins with a virtual seminar on transitioning into midlife, followed by a Saturday morning session featuring a mobile gym, massages and a health walk. In the afternoon, attendees will enjoy a picnic to network and relive memories on campus at the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER).
