Two individuals tragically lost their lives when an articulated truck transporting cement pipes was involved in a serious accident on the road between Fomena and Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred sometime between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM today, Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The fatal crash has reignited urgent calls from residents for immediate intervention to address the area’s alarming history of road accidents.
The articulated truck, with registration number GT 5501-23, was reportedly en route from Takoradi, a major port city in the Western Region, to the Kumasi area, carrying a consignment of heavy cement pipes.
An eyewitness, Kojo Antwi, who spoke to Adom News correspondent Isaac K. Normanyo, confirmed the grim details of the early morning tragedy.
“He confirmed that two people died in the accident,” Antwi stated, indicating the immediate severity of the crash.
The accident’s location on the Fomena-Adansi Asokwa road is sadly familiar to residents, who expressed deep concern and frustration over its notorious history of similar incidents. Their pleas for authorities to take decisive action to prevent further loss of life echoed loudly at the scene.
This stretch of road is part of Ghana’s extensive national road network, which often faces challenges such as poor surfacing, inadequate signage, lack of street lighting, and encroachment by human activities, all contributing to high accident rates.
According to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Ashanti Region consistently ranks among the top regions for road traffic accidents, with driver error (e.g., overspeeding, fatigue, wrongful overtaking) and poor road conditions being significant contributing factors.
Data from 2024 showed that national road traffic fatalities remained a serious public health concern, despite various safety campaigns.
DSP Samson Wunyi Mumuni, the Fomena District Police Commander, confirmed the tragic incident and the number of fatalities.
He informed the media that the bodies of the deceased have been transported to the Adansi Fomena District Hospital mortuary.
Investigations into the exact cause of the accident, including potential factors such as driver fatigue, mechanical failure, or road conditions, are expected to commence as part of standard police procedure.
