The Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology (FAAT) at Takoradi Technical University (TTU) has held an Open Day and Exhibition to launch its annual Faculty Week celebration. The week-long event aims to showcase students’ creativity, foster connections with industry for internships, promote community outreach, and inspire a generation of creative thinkers for national development.

The Open Day, which attracted students from various second-cycle schools across the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, was held under the theme: “Creativity in Motion: Rekindling the Arts for National Development.”

Vice-Chancellor of TTU, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, in his address, stated that the celebration reflects the university’s commitment to projecting the faculty to the general public and encouraging appreciation for the rich diversity of talents and ideas nurtured within the faculty.

Reflecting on the transformative power of the arts, Rev. Prof. Eshun said it inspires, provokes thought, and unites people.

Prof. Owusu Ansah Ankrah, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology, noted that the Open Day is designed to demonstrate how creativity evolves from a simple idea into tangible artefacts that can improve lives and communities. He expressed pride in the students’ enthusiasm for learning, their curiosity, and their willingness to challenge assumptions.

Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Paramount Chief of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area

The Paramount Chief of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, who served as guest speaker, urged government officials, academics, industry stakeholders, and students to recognise the vital role of the arts as a catalyst for national development. He called for greater advocacy and investment in the creative sector.

Highlighting the global impact of the creative industries, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II noted:

“In Ghana, the creative arts industry spans music, film, fashion, and visual arts — all of which boost employment, attract tourism, and generate entrepreneurial opportunities. By investing in creative arts education, we empower our youth to transform their passion into careers.”

He encouraged students to use the platform to showcase their talents and harness their creativity as a tool for development.

The Open Day also marked the launch of a week-long exhibition at the faculty, featuring student artworks and practical training projects. Activities scheduled for the week include a lecture series, fashion show, community outreach, interdepartmental sports, a faculty awards night, art walk, jams, and an eating competition.
