Transport Ministry probes sale of over 300 Metro Mass Transit buses

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, has confirmed that his ministry has initiated investigations into the disposal of more than 300 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses reportedly auctioned under the previous administration.

The issue came to light after the Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, disclosed that the buses were sold in the run-up to the 2024 general elections, with some fetching prices as low as GH¢2,500.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Monday, January 19, the Transport Minister said the inquiry is aimed at establishing whether due process was followed and whether the sales reflected fair value.

“Regarding the auctions, this is the information available to us, and the boards are reviewing the transactions to determine whether the values were appropriate,” Mr Bukari stated.

He explained that he has directed both management and the governing boards of the company to reassess the entire auction process to determine if further action is warranted.

“It is not something I can conclude on immediately. The auctions did take place, but if there are questions to be asked, we will go back into it and decide on the next steps,” he added.

Mr Bukari stressed, however, that while the review is ongoing, the ministry’s immediate focus remains on improving public transport services and easing the difficulties currently faced by commuters, noting that recent engagements with transport unions are expected to bring some relief.
