Transport ministry considers designated termination points for commercial vehicles to ease Accra traffic

The Minister for Transportation, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has outlined a long-term strategy to reduce congestion in Accra through the creation of designated termination points for commercial vehicles arriving from other parts of the country.

Under the proposed system, intercity commercial vehicles would end their journeys at purpose-built terminals on the outskirts of the capital. From these points, a network of inner-city buses would convey passengers to their final destinations within Accra.

“Terminating at all entry points, so that if vehicles from other regions enter Greater Accra, there should be a termination point where they should end, and once we have buses, they would now be permitted to run the inner perimeters of the city. These are long-term measures we are putting in place,” he said on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, December 11.

He added that the approach is expected to significantly reduce the volume of vehicles entering the central parts of the city, allowing only a controlled flow of private cars and regulated buses onto inner roads. This, he noted, would play a pivotal role in easing congestion and strengthening traffic management efforts.

The proposal forms part of the Ministry’s broader vision to modernise urban mobility and ensure a more orderly, efficient transport system for residents and visitors in the capital.
