Transport Minister commends KLM for contribution to Ghana’s aviation industry

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has commended Air France–KLM for its exceptional contribution to Ghana’s aviation industry and its role in strengthening air connectivity between Ghana and the Netherlands over the past 65 years.

He said KLM’s dedication to providing quality air travel services had not only enhanced the aviation sector but also facilitated trade, tourism, and investment.

The Minister made the commendation in a speech read on his behalf by the Director for Policy and Planning at the Ministry, Eric Tetteh-Addison, during the Commemoration of the 65th Anniversary Celebration of the Airline in Accra.

KLM’s operations in Ghana, which began on November 1, 1960, had grown alongside the country’s economy while adapting to evolving customer needs.

The airline currently operates daily flights between Amsterdam and Accra, connecting Ghana to more than 160 destinations globally.

He said, “Your dedication to providing exceptional air travel services has not only strengthened the aviation industry in Ghana but also fostered greater connectivity between our nations.”

Mr Nikpe said this commitment had made the brand synonymous with reliability, dependability and innovation, becoming a trusted partner for millions of travellers and businesses worldwide

He said the airline’s activities had created jobs, supported local enterprises, facilitated international trade, and promoted tourism and cultural exchange, thereby strengthening the bilateral relationship between Ghana and the Netherlands.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s readiness to collaborate with KLM and other private sector partners to boost air connectivity, promote tourism, and drive economic growth.

“The government will continue to create an enabling environment for private sector players to thrive and support the nation’s development agenda,” he said.

He congratulated KLM on its 65th anniversary and expressed optimism for continued cooperation and shared growth between Ghana and the Netherlands, adding that the airline’s commitment to safety and innovation continued to inspire excellence in the country’s aviation industry.

Madam Isabelle Indeweij Gerlings, Air France–KLM Country Manager, Ghana, said that over the decades, KLM had strengthened bilateral relations between Ghana and the Netherlands.

She said it had facilitated business and leisure travel, invested in local talent, and supported community initiatives in education, sustainability, and women’s empowerment.

“We thank Ghana for the warm welcome 65 years ago and the hospitality ever since. We are looking forward to the next 65 years and more together,” she added.

The Country Manager said KLM’s primary role was to provide all-important air connectivity between the region and the rest of the world, thus promoting more sustainable tourism and development.
