Traffic chaos on Accra–Kumasi Highway leaves hundreds stranded as diversions gridlock

A major traffic gridlock on the Accra–Kumasi Highway brought vehicular movement to a near standstill, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded for hours.

In an attempt to ease the congestion, police at the scene diverted traffic through alternative routes, directing motorists through towns such as Amunua Praso and Amanfokrom, with the aim of reconnecting vehicles to Nkawkaw.

However, the relief was short-lived. As traffic volumes surged along the bypass routes, congestion quickly built up, triggering another gridlock.

Vehicles inched forward bumper-to-bumper, with some motorists forced to switch off their engines amid rising frustration, as travel times more than doubled.

Commuters have expressed anger over the lack of advance notice and the limited capacity of the diversion routes, saying the temporary measure only worsened the situation and turned the detour into another traffic nightmare.
