The Tongu Chiefs’ Union (TCU) in the Volta Region has condemned the recent ritual killings at Mafi Gblorkorpe in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, saying the development is deeply worrying and concerning. According to the Union, the shocking discovery of human remains believed to be victims of ritual murders within the vicinity of the Mafi Gblorkorpe community is also shocking and heartbreaking.

A statement issued by the TCU and signed by its President and Paramount Chief of the Sokpoe Traditional Area in the South Tongu Municipality, Togbega Kadzi Zogah II, strongly and unreservedly condemned what he described as these heinous and barbaric acts, emphasising that the forefathers and ancestors of the land uphold the sanctity of human life.

Togbe Kadzi Zogah II noted that there can be no justification, be it cultural, spiritual, or otherwise, for the taking of precious lives for ritual purposes, adding that such actions are an affront to the country’s shared humanity, a disgrace to societal cherished traditions and a direct insult to the dignity of Ghanaians.

‘We must be clear: the cultural values and customs of our people do not, and have never endorsed the killings of fellow human beings for either personal gain or whatever purpose’, the TCU President intimated.

Togbe Kadzi Zogah II said any individual or group of persons that engage in or facilitate such despicable acts is an enemy to society and must be made to face the full rigours of the law.

He commended the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and other security agencies for their efforts in trying to get to the bottom of the matter and urged them to ensure a thorough investigation that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of all the perpetrators and accomplices involved in the crime.

Togbega Kadzi Zogah II also called on his fellow traditional leaders, religious authorities, as well as community members and leaders to unite in rooting out such evils from among the people. ‘Don’t forget that it happened in the Mafia Traditional area today. Tomorrow can be a bad day for you too, so let us come together to stop this wicked behaviour in our communities, the TCU President emphasised.

He stressed the need for the youth to be educated to uphold the rule of law and also work collectively to ensure that communities remain safe, humane and morally upright to promote total development, peace and cohesion. ‘May justice be served, ’ Togbega Kadzi Zogah pointed out.

In early July 2025, human remains were tragically exhumed from a shrine at Mafi Gborkorpe on the Sogakope-Mafi Adidome road, which led to the arrest of some individuals suspected of being behind the gruesome murder of a man a couple of months ago.
The incident attracted several reactions from all manner of citizens and civil society organisations, who expressed concern about the safety of the citizenry.

Investigations by the police over the period pointed to the Mafi Gborkorpe Shrine and its operators, who have allegedly been accused by the general public of perpetrating such heinous crimes in the area.
