The Member of Parliament for Tolon and First Deputy Majority Whip, Alhaji Habib Iddrisu, has revealed that he requested the termination of the Tolon road contract awarded to National Democratic Congress (NDC) financier, Alhaji Fuzak Yushaw, also known as Yelzoli, due to the contractor’s failure to fulfill the terms of the agreement.
Speaking on Tamale-based Diamond FM, Iddrisu explained that the decision to terminate the contract and reassign it to a new contractor came after the NDC-affiliated businessman failed to commence work on the project for eight years. The road contract, originally awarded in September 2016, had remained largely untouched until Iddrisu personally visited the site two months ago.
“I aided in the termination of Fuzak’s contract because of his inability to perform,” the MP stated. “The Ministry of Roads will not terminate a contract just because I said so; it must meet certain criteria, and that’s what happened.”
Iddrisu elaborated that the project had been divided into two parts, with one portion successfully completed and tarred by another contractor. However, Fuzak failed to undertake work on his assigned section. Iddrisu revealed that when he inquired about the delays, Fuzak claimed he had carried out some work but had not been paid. “I asked him to bring the certificate for me to help push for payment,” Iddrisu said.
The MP expressed frustration over the contractor’s failure to visit the site for years, questioning the rationale behind awarding the contract to someone who had not shown up to work. “Why would a road contract be awarded to you, and for eight years you haven’t visited the site?” Iddrisu asked.
Highlighting the consequences of the road’s poor condition, Iddrisu lamented that some constituents had lost their lives or sustained serious injuries in accidents due to the neglected state of the road. “In fact, people died on that road, the road Fuzak refused to work on, and people had broken legs and arms because they were involved in an accident on that same road,” he said.
Iddrisu defended his decision, emphasizing that his priority is the development of his constituency. “I terminated the contract because I want to develop my people,” he explained. “If you are going to be a problem, I will definitely take the contract from you. I am ready to take away any contract if it’s not going to be beneficial to my people and constituency. I didn’t do it because I hate you; I did it because you failed to do the work.”
