The Paramount Chief of the Kpalime Traditional Area, Togbega Atikpladza Agbi Yao VIII, has called on traditional leaders across Ghana to deepen unity, resolve internal disputes, and collaborate across borders to fast-track development and preserve peace in their communities.
“We cannot continue to live in isolation, quarrelling over boundaries and chieftaincy disputes,” he declared. “How can we share boundaries and not care about each other? That attitude must stop.”
He made this call at Boso-Gua in the Eastern Region, where Ahunabobrim Akuamoah Kwao II, Kyidomhene of the Boso-Gua Traditional Area, held the final ancestral funeral rites for 25 departed chiefs and one queen mother of the Kyidom division.
Togbega Atikpladza said traditional leadership must no longer be a space for rivalry and division but a powerful force for unity and progress.
He noted that persistent land and chieftaincy litigations have weakened traditional governance and denied communities the benefits of strategic cooperation and shared development.
“Unity is not just symbolic it is the foundation for roads, schools, jobs, and investment,” he stressed. “If we are divided, we cannot speak with one voice, and without that, development will continue to elude us.”
“Ten years ago, it was rare for paramount chiefs from different regions to attend each other’s events. Today, we are seeing greater interaction and support and that is the future we need to build.”
While urging traditional rulers to preserve the values and wisdom of their forebears, he emphasized the need for reforms in leadership styles and customs that no longer serve the current generation.
“Our ancestors didn’t have the tools we have today. Let’s hold on to what is good from our past, but also change what is outdated. Culture is dynamic. We must adapt and grow.”
He called on chiefs to look beyond their boundaries and unite their resources and voices to demand development and build stronger communities together.
“If we come together, we become a stronger voice one that government and investors cannot ignore.”
In a passionate appeal to the youth, Togbega Atikpladza condemned the rising trend of drug abuse, warning that it threatens the future of the country.
“I plead with the youth stay away from drugs. It will destroy your life and your dreams,” he warned. “Instead, take advantage of the opportunities around you. Let’s unite and use our energy to build, not destroy.”
The occasion, marked by rich traditional rituals and solemn ancestral rites, symbolized not only the honouring of past leaders but also a renewed commitment to unity, progress, and cultural continuity.
