A 25-year-old tiler has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District for escaping from lawful custody.
Akwasi Kuffour pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea.
Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu that the complainant was a police officer stationed at Abuakwa, near Akropong.
He explained that in 2023, Kuffour was arraigned before the Akropong District Court on charges of assaulting a public officer, resisting arrest, and causing damage.
He was subsequently remanded into prison custody.
However, while exiting the Magistrate’s chamber, Kuffour took to his heels and escaped, going into hiding.
According to the prosecution, Kuffour was rearrested in April 2024 at Kumasi-Tanoso for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
During his caution statement, he confessed to escaping from lawful custody.
Following further investigations, he was charged and brought before the court, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
