A delegation from TikTok, led by Tokunbo Ibrahim, Government Relations and Public Policy Lead for West Africa, has paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George (MP), to congratulate him on his appointment and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The meeting focused on aligning TikTok’s initiatives with the Ministry’s priorities, particularly in the areas of online safety, digital inclusion, and youth empowerment.

Ms Ibrahim highlighted TikTok’s recent launch of a dedicated STEM feed—featuring educational content in science, technology, engineering and mathematics—as part of the platform’s evolving commitment to learning and skills development.

She reaffirmed TikTok’s focus on ensuring a safe digital environment for users in Ghana, noting that “harmful misinformation is not allowed on the platform,” and pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in this regard.

“Given your leadership in advancing digital inclusion, online safety, and youth empowerment, we are looking forward to seeing how the digital economy will continue to grow under your direction,” Ms Ibrahim said.

Welcoming the team, Minister Samuel George stressed the importance of safeguarding children online. He called on TikTok to enforce robust mechanisms that uphold age restrictions, protect minors, and ensure content remains appropriate and safe for all users.

He encouraged the platform to go beyond entertainment and contribute meaningfully to learning and capacity building.

The Minister expressed keen interest in TikTok’s algorithm structure specific to Ghana and lauded the introduction of the STEM feed. “We will work with you to see how to drive content on the One Million Coders Programme to help Ghanaians use the app to learn and also pick classes,” he said.

He further proposed a boot camp for bloggers to maximise the economic potential of content creation in Ghana.

On the issue of content moderation, Hon. George emphasised the urgent need to tackle misinformation, disinformation and hate speech. He urged TikTok to consider establishing a content consideration team dedicated to safeguarding the integrity of the platform and protecting users in Ghana.

The engagement ended with both parties expressing optimism about a collaborative path forward to deepen Ghana’s digital ecosystem through responsible innovation and shared goals.
