This Saturday on Newsfile, host Samson Lardy Anyenini and his panelists will discuss the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Mahama.

President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice following the establishment of a committee to investigate petitions filed against her.

The decision, announced in a statement from the Presidency, is said to comply with constitutional provisions and was made in consultation with the Council of State.

The President referenced Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the formation of a committee to investigate allegations against a superior court judge if a prima facie case is established.

According to the statement, the President believes sufficient grounds exist to justify further inquiry.

The panel will explore whether this development is unprecedented and what implications it may have for judicial independence and constitutional order.

Also on the show, the panel will examine the government’s latest strategy to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Earlier this week, the government announced that all gold tracked through illegal mining activities and confiscated via the blockchain tracking system by the Ghana Gold Board will be sold, with the proceeds used to finance the reclamation of degraded lands and polluted water bodies.

Senior Presidential Advisor, Joyce Bawah Mogtari said the Ghana Gold Board is actively working to ensure that illegally mined gold is barred from entering the formal market.

She further explained that the revenue generated from the sale of confiscated gold would support efforts to clean up the environment, particularly rivers and lands devastated by unregulated mining over the years.

This policy adds to recent actions taken by the government, including the immediate revocation of all mining licenses held by Akonta Mining Company Limited, following allegations of illegal mining and the unauthorised sale of concessions within protected forest reserves.

The show will explore whether these actions signal a turning point in Ghana’s battle against galamsey, and what more can be done to curb the environmental destruction it continues to cause.

Tune in to Newsfile this Saturday as the panel breaks down these critical national issues with insight and clarity.
