There will be no hiding place for criminals who injure or kill police officers - Mahama warns

President John Mahama has warned that individuals targeting and killing personnel of the Ghana Police Service and other law‑enforcement agencies will be dealt with ruthlessly.

Speaking at the National Police Headquarters after presenting 100 pickup vehicles to enhance operations nationwide on Thursday, January 8, President Mahama expressed deep concern over recent attacks on security personnel.

He warned that criminal elements who target police officers and other security personnel will have no hiding place, vowing ruthless action against them.

“There will be no hiding place for criminal elements. I said this afternoon, especially the criminal elements who seek to either injure or kill our police officers and other security officers, we shall come after you and deal with you very ruthlessly when we catch up with you,” he said.

President Mahama recalled a recent memorial service held in honour of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year, noting that several of them were shot by armed robbers and other criminal elements.

“Recently we attended a memorial service, a memorial event to honour police officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty in the last one year, and several of them had been shot either by armed robbers or other criminal elements,” he said.

He stressed that the state will respond decisively to any attack on law enforcement officers.

“I want to serve notice that the police deal very ruthlessly with anybody who harms, injures, or kills a police officer.

“We will hunt them down, and we’ll neutralize them, and so this is serving notice to those elements. If you shoot at a police officer, we’ll come after you,” the president added.

President Mahama also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening the Ghana Police Service through sustained investment, referencing earlier efforts to improve the Service’s operational capacity.

“In December 2025, when we handed over 40 armoured vehicles to the Ghana Police Service, I made a clear commitment to the nation that this government will continue to retool the service, not with words but with action,” he said.

His comments come amid security concerns following the killing of a police officer by unidentified gunmen two weeks ago in a late-night attack at Karimenga on the Bolgatanga–Tamale highway.

The attack also left two other officers injured.
