The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has confirmed that discussions have taken place with Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel regarding a potential concert at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Reports of a possible December performance have stirred both excitement and concern, particularly among football fans worried about the protection of the pitch.
However, Ampofo Ankrah says the Authority is making efforts to accommodate both sporting and non-sporting activities at the national venue.
“The facility is not only the pitch; we have other amenities that can be used equitably,” he told Citi Sports.
“For Vybz Kartel, what I can say is that there has been engagement, there has been contact, and for now, that is all I can say.”
Concerns over hosting non-sporting events at sports venues have persisted due to the NSA’s past struggles with protecting the playing surfaces during such programmes.
In several instances, the failure to use proper pitch covers has left the turf in poor condition, rendering it unfit for high-level football matches.
A recent example is the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, which was banned last year from hosting CAF Category A matches after a large church gathering left the pitch damaged. The venue has yet to be cleared for such fixtures.
