In a bid to alleviate the plight of the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, the Saviour Church of Ghana has donated food items and cash to victims in the Volta and Eastern regions.
Loads of items in about ten trucks including 400 bags of rice, 1,000 bags of maize, a truck-load of plantains, dozens of sachet water, and a cash of ¢50,000 among others, were donated to victims in the three Tongu districts, and the North and South Dayi districts.
The General Superintendent of the church, Opanyin Abraham Adusei, explained that the church was touched by the suffering caused to residents.
“When I heard the news, I quickly called the executives of the church to deliberate on how best we can help them out of the situation. So, we as a church that has been blessed so much by the Lord, we decided to give these items to the people to reduce the impact the spillage had had on them,” he said.
From the Volta region, the leader of the church, Opanyin Abraham and his elders moved to the Kwahu Afram Plains South district where they donated 50 bags of rice, 100 bags of maize , and 25 pieces of mat to the victims of the spillage.
In his message, Opanin Abraham Adusei stated that one of the core business of churches is to help people in need.
“The word of God instructs all his followers to be each other’s keeper especially in hard times hence the donations by the church and myself. We have taken it upon ourselves to extend a helping hand to all victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage to help them in this difficult times,” he said.
The District Chief Executive for the area, Evans Kyei Ntiri, expressed gratitude to the Saviour Church of Ghana and Opanin Adusei for their assistance. He mentioned that the items will be distributed to approximately 1,000 victims and requested additional help for the displaced persons.
Similarly, in the Kwahu Afram Plains North district, the District Chief Executive, Isaac Ofori-Koree, received 100 bags of maize, 50 bags of rice, and some pieces of mat on behalf of the displaced victims.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Saviour Church and its leader for the kind gesture.
He highlighted that his district is one of the most affected areas, but due to limited media coverage of the impact, their situation is not widely known.
An elder of the church, Engineer John Kwaku Adusei, disclosed that all the food items distributed by the Saviour Church of Ghana were sourced from Gyidiman farms, a farm owned by the church at Afram plains.
“Yes, all the food items are from our farms in Afram plains. As a church, we have cultivated large acres of maize, rice, cocoa among other foodstuffs so we brought all these from our farms except the bags of sachet water produced by the same church at its headquarters in Osiem,” he noted.
