The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being the main perpetrators and enablers of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, across the country.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, November 5, Mr. Kodua Frimpong asserted that it has become evident to Ghanaians that individuals within the NDC, including Members of Parliament and party executives at various levels, are deeply involved in illegal mining activities.

“On the galamsey fight, the jury is out there, and it is very clear to the people of Ghana that the real galamseyers and enablers of galamsey are in the NDC. From their Members of Parliament to party executives from national to branch levels, they have taken over almost all the galamsey sites in the country and are mining so irresponsibly and with impunity,” he said.

The NPP General Secretary further alleged that some NDC-linked illegal miners have gone as far as attacking military personnel deployed to enforce anti-galamsey operations.

Mr. Kodua Frimponglamented the environmental impact of illegal mining, noting that rising turbidity levels in major rivers have forced some water treatment plants to shut down, thereby worsening the country’s water security situation.

He acknowledged the severity of the illegal mining crisis and reaffirmed the NPP’s readiness to support the government’s efforts to curb the menace.

Mr. Kodua Frimpong emphasised that, unlike the NDC when in opposition, the NPP intends to act responsibly and put the national interest above partisan politics.

“We are not going to behave like them when they were in opposition, where they made it look like galamsey was an Akufo-Addo creation and made a lot of political capital therefrom. The NPP is a responsible opposition, and we are ready to assist in tackling this generational crisis for the love of country,” he stated.
