Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has assured Ghanaians that the next NPP government will fully complete the Agenda 111 hospital projects, describing it as one of the most transformative healthcare initiatives in Ghana’s history.
The programme, launched under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, was designed to provide every district without a hospital with a modern 100-bed facility, complete with accommodation for doctors, nurses, and other health workers.
It also included the construction of regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, rehabilitation of the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region, and two new psychiatric hospitals in Kumasi and Tamale.
Although many of the facilities had reached advanced stages of completion by the end of 2024, Dr Bawumia accused the NDC government of abandoning the project.
Speaking to constituency executives and former NPP officials in the Greater Accra Region at the start of a three-day engagement, Dr Bawumia expressed concern about the stalled works.
“When we were in government, we introduced policies and programmes designed to improve the lives of every Ghanaian. Some of the major policies were the introduction of the Medical Drone delivery service, a massive expansion and retooling of the National Ambulance Service, and the provision of healthcare infrastructure under Agenda 111, to ensure that we have an enhanced healthcare system in Ghana.
“But sadly, the new government seems to have abandoned this major investment in healthcare. Nine months into their tenure, there is no indication that they are completing them to improve access to healthcare. This is very worrying.
“I promise you: If they don’t complete them, the next NPP government will fully complete the implementation of this very important investment into our lives and save many lives, even those unborn.
“Completing these hospitals will not just help to save lives but will also create many different jobs for the youth of Ghana.”
Dr Bawumia emphasised that finishing the Agenda 111 programme will remain a top priority should the NPP return to power.
