The McCarthy Hill School in Accra has been crowned the overall winner of the second edition of the KofiA. Tawiah Good Citizenship Challenge.
RisingSun Montessori School, also in Accra, came in second place, while International Community School in Kumasi took third place.
This year’s challenge saw an impressive turnout of participating schools that showcased their commitment to community service, leadership, and building character, aligning with the foundation’s mission to cultivate good citizenship and strong values in the next generation.

The exciting challenge, which was opened to all Ghanaian schools from upper primary to Senior High Schools, required the participating teams to identify real community problems and implement practical, sustainable solutions. The goal is to develop essential character traits in students and young people through service learning and to promote good citizenship among students and young people in Ghana.
Outstanding Winners and Their Impactful Projects.
The McCarthy Hill School took the top spot with their remarkable “I Care Day” initiative, a true demonstration of compassion and community service. Over the course of three weeks, the team successfully raised about GHC 245,000 to provide life-saving neonatal equipment to the Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital.

The donated items included an incubator, a phototherapy machine, a CPAP device, an oxygen cylinder, a cardiotocography machine, vein finders, a pulse oximeter, and a baby weighing scale. Their ability to mobilise the entire school community to exceed their fundraising goal showcases exceptional leadership, empathy, and organisational skills.
In second place was RisingSun Montessori School, who worked on a thoughtful project to address mental and emotional health, an area often overlooked in youth-led service learning. Using art therapy to help children express trauma, the team collaborated with LEKMA Hospital clinical psychologists and Sakumono Complex Primary A School.
The team was praised for their professionalism, ethical sensitivity, and compassion. Testimonies from beneficiaries highlighted deep emotional transformation, making this a standout initiative deserving of special citation for creativity and impact on mental and emotional health.
The third-place award went to the Kumasi Campus of the International Community School, whose students undertook a transformative clean water project. Focused on providing clean and accessible water to the students and staff of Semenhyiakrom D/A Basic School, this project delivered a sustainable solution benefiting over 600 people.
The team raised nearly GHC 80,000 and aligned their initiative with UN SDGs 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation) and 3 (Good Health & Well-being). The project demonstrated strong teamwork, resource mobilisation, and a long-term vision for community development.
Several other schools also launched remarkable initiatives that deserve recognition, including Charles Wesley Academy Foundation, SOS Hermann Gmeiner International College, Faith Montessori School, ChristField School, Prestea Anglican Primary School, among others. Their projects collectively demonstrated the passion, enthusiasm, teamwork and problem-solving skills of all the schools that participated in the challenge.

RisingSun Montessori School was awarded GH¢10,000, and the International Community School received GH¢5,000, both of which were accompanied by certificates and plaques. Building Character Through Service Learning: The Impact of the Challenge.
In line with the foundation’s commitment to character development through service learning, the Kofi A. Tawiah Foundation believes that instilling the values of respect, honesty and social responsibility in the youth is essential for building a more ethical and prosperous society.
The Kofi A. Tawiah Good Citizenship Challenge provided students with the opportunity to contribute to their communities by identifying problems and taking initiatives to address them.
The challenge rekindled the spirit of volunteerism and community service among students, raising awareness of social issues and encouraging actions to help resolve them. Additionally, it offered students a chance to put their values into practice, reinforcing the development of important traits necessary for good citizenship.
Looking ahead, the Kofi A. Tawiah Foundation is committed to expanding the reach and impact of the Good Citizenship Challenge. The Foundation envisions a Ghana where every young person possesses strong character, a service-oriented mindset, and the courage to lead positive change wherever they find themselves.
As this year’s edition concludes, the Kofi A. Tawiah Foundation celebrates all participants for their dedication and impact. Their inspiring efforts remind us that the future of Ghana is promising, as its young people are prepared to lead with character and the mindset to solve problems.
