The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has issued a stern ultimatum to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), demanding the immediate conclusion and signing of Conditions of Service agreements for its members.
In a letter dated 26th May 2025 and addressed to the Chief Executive of the FWSC, TEWU expressed deep frustration over prolonged delays in finalising negotiations for members working across several public institutions, including the Ghana Education Service (GES), public and technical universities, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority.
According to TEWU, these delays have resulted in significant disparities in benefits between their members and other categories of educational staff.
The union cited, for example, the increase in the Professional Development Allowance for teaching staff under the GES from GH¢1,200 to GH¢2,400, which non-teaching staff have been denied due to the unresolved negotiations.
Similarly, TEWU noted that senior staff and management of public and technical universities have been granted utility and vehicle maintenance allowances following the successful signing of their Conditions of Service — benefits that TEWU members have not received.
“These delays have left our members at a disadvantage and have caused widespread agitation across our ranks,” the letter stated. “Leadership can no longer contain the agitations after calming members for many months.”
The union has now given the FWSC a deadline of 31st May, 2025 to reconvene negotiations and conclude the agreement, warning that it will be “compelled to advise ourselves” should the Commission fail to respond.
“We stand for Truth, Enlightenment, Wisdom and Unity,” the statement said, underscoring the union’s readiness to take further action if necessary.
The FWSC has not yet issued a response.
