The new lineup is built around a camera system where artificial intelligence handles the decisions most photographers get wrong, from light correction to framing to artistic transformation.

TECNO launched the CAMON 50 Series in Ghana, bringing three new models to the Ghanaian market. The CAMON 50 Ultra 5G, CAMON 50 Pro, and CAMON 50 are the company’s most software-integrated handsets to date, designed around the idea that the gap between a good shot and a great one is increasingly a question of intelligent processing rather than hardware alone.

The Camera Hardware That Makes the AI Worth Having

The foundation of the series is a 50-megapixel Sony LYTIA 700C night sensor in the Ultra 5G, feeding into an AI RAW 2.0 imaging engine that the company says processes light and detail with a precision that manual editing cannot easily replicate after the fact. The point is that the intelligence works at the moment of capture, not as a filter applied afterwards.

DXOMARK, whose camera rankings are referenced across the industry, gave the CAMON 50 Ultra 5G an overall score of 146 and a portrait score of 142, both the highest the organisation has recorded for a smartphone under $600. DXOMARK’s chief executive, Frédérique Guichard, highlighted the phone’s skin tone accuracy specifically, saying TECNO’s Universal Tone technology closely matches how users naturally perceive a scene, a quality she described as especially meaningful across African markets.

A 50-megapixel portrait camera on the Ultra 5G and Pro adds a second focal length, tuned to 70mm and designed for people shots that separate the subject from the background cleanly. The zoom system extends to 60X, paired with Super-Zoom FlashSnap for sharp action capture at distance.

What the AI Actually Does

AI LightMaster 2.0 is perhaps the most immediately practical feature in the camera system. It works in the background on every shot, identifying and removing glare, reflections and shadow that would otherwise require post-processing to fix. In bright conditions, it handles the overexposure that bleaches out skin and sky. In mixed or artificial light, it corrects for the colour casts that make indoor photography look flat and clinical. The result, according to TECNO, is an image that looks as if it was shot under better conditions than it was.

AI Auto Zoom is a framing tool. It reads the scene continuously through the viewfinder, identifies the main subject, and adjusts the crop in real time to produce the strongest composition available. Rather than requiring the photographer to reposition, it does the editorial work automatically, which TECNO describes as having a framing assistant built into the shutter.

The AI Art Gallery extends the creative work beyond the camera itself. Users can take any photograph and apply stylised filters drawn from international art movements or African artistic traditions, producing results that go well beyond the standard filter adjustments found on most phones. A related tool can animate a still image into a short video clip, and a spatial photography mode adds perceptible depth to standard photographs by constructing a three-dimensional interpretation of the scene.

AI Beyond the Lens

The phone’s AI tools extend into daily use through a dedicated shortcut button. It pulls up a set of functions including one-tap article summarisation for quickly digesting long reads, a writing aid that helps users rework and refine social media captions, and a health information assistant. The built-in voice assistant, Ella, has been substantially updated. She now offers language coaching through back-and-forth conversation, an on-demand tutoring function for academic questions, and general problem-solving that TECNO says is designed to function as a 24-hour support resource.

For productivity across devices, the series connects to TECNO’s OneLeap platform, which links the phone to compatible TECNO laptops and tablets. It enables screen mirroring, shared keyboard and mouse control, and cross-device copy-paste for both text and images, effectively turning the phone into the centre of a small multi-screen workspace.

The Hardware Behind It

The CAMON 50 Ultra 5G runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 processor. All three models feature a 1.5K AMOLED display at 144Hz and carry IP68/IP69/IP69K certification for dust and water resistance. Battery capacity reaches 6,500mAh with 45W fast charging across the range.

A security platform called TGuard ships with the series, offering device tracking that continues to operate without a SIM or a charged battery. FreeLink allows calls and messages over Bluetooth in locations without mobile coverage.

“The AI is not just for show,” said Jack Guo, TECNO’s General Manager. “It is there to help, whether that is giving your photos a creative twist or simply making your phone smarter and easier to use. We have focused on making it feel warm and intuitive.”

About TECNO: TECNO is a global technology brand operating in over 70 markets, focused on delivering advanced smartphone and device experiences in emerging markets. Its product range includes smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearables, and smart home devices.
