TCC-International Centre for Innovation, Manufacturing, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship (TCC-CIMET) has trained 40 members of the Wiamoase community in soap making.

The training, organized as part of the World Engineering Day celebrations, equipped participants with the skills to produce both bar and liquid soap.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Kenneth Donkor, a Research Fellow at TCC, emphasized that the initiative aimed to provide community members with an additional source of income alongside their primary occupation as farmers.

“We recognize Wiamoase as a farming community, and while you may have expected training related to agriculture, we assure you that such programs are in our plans. Today, however, our goal is to equip you with soap-making skills, which can serve as a supplementary business. This way, you can generate income even while waiting for the planting season,” he stated.

Mrs. Agnes Oppong, also a Research Fellow at TCC, supervised the training and urged participants to prioritize safety when practicing soap making at home.

“It is important to follow safety guidelines when making soap, as some of the chemicals involved require careful handling. Ensure you use protective gear and work in a well-ventilated area,” she advised.

Some community members expressed their appreciation for the training, highlighting its impact on their livelihoods.

“I used to think that these advertisements about learning soap making and other skills in a day were a lie. But today, you have proved to me that it is possible to learn how to make all these things in a day, and we are very grateful to you for the enlightenment and the skill,” one participant shared.

Additionally, Mr. Donkor announced plans for a future training session on biochar production, which will introduce farmers to an innovative method of producing eco-friendly charcoal.

“We will be here again to take you through biochar production. We brought samples of the charcoal produced from the process so you can see what we are talking about. We hope you will inform your colleagues and neighbors to join us next time when we come around,” he added.

The training aligns with TCC-CIMET’s commitment to empowering local communities through skill development, technology transfer, and sustainable economic initiatives.
