The Technology Consultancy Centre -International Centre for Innovation, Manufacturing, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship (TCC-CIMET) in collaboration with the Engineering Council have engaged artisans in Kumasi on Manufacturing standards.

As part of the 2025 World Engineering Day Celebration, artisans in Kumasi have received education on modern manufacturing and automotive standards.

Director General of TCC-CIMET, Prof. Francis Davis explained that the centre seeks to develop a curriculum that seeks to certify artisans in the various specialties.

“This initiative is not only about skill enhancement; it is about creating a sustainable engineering curriculum that will certify artisans in modern manufacturing practices. Certification will not only boost credibility but will also open doors to larger markets, increase business opportunities, and enhance economic growth,” he said.

He also highlighted the need to equip local artisans with skills and knowledge on modern equipment in their various fields of operations.

“By equipping artisans with the necessary skills and knowledge, we are building a bridge between traditional expertise and emerging technological advancements. Moreover, this initiative is driven by the need to help local artisans compete with products from outside Ghana.

“The global market is evolving, with sophisticated and highly competitive manufacturing industries producing cost-effective and high-quality products. To ensure that our artisans are not left behind, we must embrace smart manufacturing trends that enhance productivity and efficiency,” he said.

The Registrar of the Engineering Council, Ing. Isaac Bedu stated that artisans must meet specific requirements to obtain certification and state recognition.

“Ghana is a country that operates with laws. You cannot get up and do anything you like because of these laws. There is a need for the state to recognize your profession so that you are on a safer side. That is why we are here. We are here to guide you and teach you how you can be registered and certified as a leader in your field of expertise” he said.

The Consultant for the Suame Magazine Industrial Development Organization (SMIDO), Mr. Patrick Okyere, urged artisans to obtain certification in their areas of expertise.

He emphasized that maintaining professional standards is essential to protecting their reputation from being compromised by unqualified practitioners.

“We all know that there are some artisans out there who will destroy your vehicle if you bring them to their shops to get them fixed and their actions affect all of us but if we are able to certify ourselves according to the manufacturing standards and the guidelines provided we will be able to set ourselves apart from those group of people,” he said.

Artisans from Asafo, Sofoline, Atonsu and Emina were present at  the event.
