The Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced a 39-year-old taxi driver to 12 years imprisonment for defiling a 14-year-old girl at Mataheko, near Dansoman, Accra.

Although Ammisah pleaded not guilty, the court presided over by Halimah Al-Alawa Abdul-Bassit found him guilty after trial and imposed the custodial sentence.

In his defence, Ammisah told the court he had a cordial relationship with the victim’s mother and had once expressed romantic interest in her, which she declined.

He claimed that despite the refusal, they remained friendly until he began mocking her for dating an older taxi driver, leading to a breakdown in communication for the past two years.

Presenting the case, Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder said the complainant, a businesswoman and aunt of the victim, resides in Lapaz, while the victim lives with her biological mother in Mataheko Pharmacy.

Ammisah resides in the same vicinity.

According to the prosecution, the victim often spent weekends at the complainant’s residence.

On October 28, 2023, the victim awoke visibly weak and unable to sit properly, prompting her aunt to question her condition.

The prosecution stated that the complainant questioned the victim about her condition.

The victim then disclosed that Ammisah had repeatedly taken her in his red car, away from her friends in the neighbourhood, to a location at Mataheko, where he put a white substance into a bottle of Coke and gave it to her to drink and had sex with her.

The prosecutor stated that following the incident, Ammisah gave the victim GHS2.00 and threatened her with death should she disclose what had happened.

A complaint was subsequently lodged with the Odorkor Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), resulting in Ammisah’s arrest.

During interrogation, Ammisah denied engaging in sexual activity with the victim.

A police medical form was issued to the complainant to facilitate the victim’s examination and treatment at a medical facility.

The prosecution confirmed that the medical form was duly completed and endorsed by a qualified medical practitioner.

Following investigations, the case was prepared for trial.
