The people of Tamale Central in the Northern Region are in deep mourning following the tragic death of their Member of Parliament and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday.
Dr Murtala, widely admired for his dedication and transformative leadership, died alongside seven others when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while en route to Obuasi.
His passing has left Tamale Central heartbroken, with many constituents struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.
Residents described Dr. Murtala as a towering figure whose presence and influence extended beyond his constituency to the national stage. They reflected on his wisdom, moral guidance, and the visible development he brought to the area over the past eight years.
Many recalled his personal integrity, humility, and gratitude, often going out of his way to acknowledge acts of kindness and support those who helped him.
Dr Murtala’s death marks a significant loss not only for Tamale Central but for the entire nation.
The crash also claimed the lives of Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah; a presidential staffer; and several military personnel. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
