Gertrude Torkonoo

The Supreme Court has set Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, to begin hearing the injunction application against processes initiated by President John Dramani Mahama to potentially remove the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

Member of Parliament for Tafo in the Ashanti region Vincent Ekow Assafuah on March 27th 2025, sued the Attorney General over what he described as constitutional breaches committed by the President when he referred some three separate petitions asking for the removal of the Chief Justice from office to the Council of State without notifying the Chief Justice.

The MP states that the President violated a number of clauses in Article 146 of the Constitution when he referred the petition to remove the Chief Justice from office without notifying her and hearing her side of the matter before escalating the same.

According to the MP, forwarding the matter to the Counsel of State at the blind side of the Chief Justice also constitutes a constitutional breach of the protection of her security of tenure.

The Supreme Court on April 5 indefinitely adjourned the hearing of the case due to a training programme being undertaken by some 50 state Attorneys.
