Sunday’s match is a celebration, not a decider – Sports Minister Kofi Adams declares

Sports Minister Kofi Adams says Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Comoros should be seen as a celebration of the Black Stars rather than a decisive encounter.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, the Buem MP said Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 win over the Central African Republic (CAR) has effectively secured the team’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“The goal difference is huge, and it is not possible for Madagascar to go to Mali and beat them by 8-0, and then we will lose by 8-0. It’s just not possible,” he said.

The Black Stars’ dominant performance in Morocco saw them maintain a three-point lead at the top of Group I, putting them just a point away from formal qualification.

Mr Adams explained that, by all practical measures, Ghana’s qualification is already settled.

“So technically speaking, we are there, and we considered this game as a qualification game,” he said.

According to the Sports Minister, Sunday’s match against Comoros will be more about appreciating the players than battling for points.

“Sunday is just for us to get to the stadium to celebrate the players,” he said. “They will play for us, but we, the supporters, must come to the stadium to celebrate them.”

He urged fans to turn up in large numbers on Sunday, October 12, to show gratitude and support for the team’s efforts throughout the qualifiers.

“On Sunday, the 12th of October, all of us must come to this,” he said, emphasising that the atmosphere should reflect pride and celebration, not pressure.

The Black Stars’ resounding win over CAR has reignited optimism about Ghana’s return to the World Cup stage, and the Sports Minister believes the final game offers the perfect moment to celebrate that achievement with the players.
