Dzodze, Volta Region — A sense of compassion and unity is prevailing in the wake of the devastating flood that has wreaked havoc in the Volta Region.

Thousands have been displaced from their homes, with the worst-affected districts being South, Central, and North Tongu, following the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA) due to rising water levels.

As of October 17, the flood had forced approximately 31,000 people to be relocated. Among the most affected are schoolchildren who have lost their homes and belongings. The situation has tugged at the heartstrings of many Ghanaians, including students at Vehem Mawunyo International School in Dzodze and Penyi.

The pupils of Vehem Mawunyo International School, upon hearing about the plight of the flood victims, felt a deep sense of empathy, particularly for the school children who had suffered the most. In response, the students, alongside the founders of Heavenly Integrity Mission and Smilet, took action to assist and console the flood victims in Mepe, one of the severely affected areas.

With remarkable speed and organisation, the team gathered essential supplies, including food, clothing, toiletries, and drinking water. Parents and students from Vehem Mawunyo International School made immediate contributions of these much-needed items. On Saturday, October 28, 2023, the relief supplies were delivered to the affected communities.

The mission of these compassionate students and their supporters extends beyond providing relief. They aim to inspire others to lend a helping hand and shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by the affected communities. Their dedication to encouraging solidarity and support for those in need is nothing short of inspiring.

The heartfelt commitment of these students to make a positive difference in the lives of flood victims has touched the hearts of many. Their message is clear: every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact on the lives of those who are vulnerable and in need.

Pastor Godwin Adzigbli, who shared the story of this remarkable initiative, emphasised the importance of collective action and urged everyone to contribute whatever support they can.

“In these trying times, let us demonstrate to the flood victims in the Volta Region that they are not alone in facing this battle. Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to those who have lost so much,” he said.
