Stop killing ants with sledgehammers and fix deteriorating security – Mahama told

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has taken a swipe at President John Mahama over what he describes as the sharp deterioration of Ghana’s peace and security under the current administration.

In a social media post on Tuesday, September 9, the Assin South MP urged the President to prioritise restoring safety in the country rather than unleashing state power on political opponents.

His comments follow the recent arrest of the New Patriotic Party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, who has been charged with misdemeanour by the police.

“Mr President, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and Chairman of the National Security Council, for what it is worth, the deterioration of Ghana’s peace, safety and security under your watch in less than a year, must rather be your utmost concern rather than going hard after your political opponents,” he wrote.

He added, “Stop killing ants with a sledgehammer and fix our security. Exacting maximum force of state security apparatus on opposition activists for the least infraction is a misplaced priority.”

Rev. Ntim Fordjour pointed to rising crime rates and worsening rankings in global peace indices as evidence of Ghana’s declining security environment.

He noted that the country had fallen from being the second most peaceful in Africa and 38th globally in 2021 to seventh on the continent and 61st worldwide in 2025.

Highlighting specific incidents, the MP cited the escalation of the Bawku conflict, the Bole-Sawla (Gbinyiri) clashes that have claimed over 31 lives, and the displacement of thousands, including 13,000 refugees in Côte d’Ivoire.

He also mentioned rising violence in Nkwanta, mysterious killings, deadly festival clashes, and electoral disturbances in Ablekuma North.

“Please restore Ghana to the once safe and peaceful country that was handed over to you on January 7,” he charged.
