In a major show of corporate social responsibility, Star Oil Company Limited has donated 500 life jackets to school children and residents of CK Kope, a lakeside community in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region. The donation aims to ensure the safety of residents, especially school children, who cross the lake daily to attend classes.

The life-saving gesture was announced during a brief but impactful ceremony at CK Kope, where executives of Star Oil reaffirmed their commitment to the welfare and safety of the community.

A Lifeline for the Community

For the people of CK Kope, crossing the lake is a daily routine—and a dangerous one. Schoolchildren, fishermen, and traders often risk their lives on the water without life jackets, leading to tragic accidents and drownings. The donation from Star Oil, therefore, represents not just a gift but a lifeline.

Torgbui Xornametor, Board Chairman of Star Oil, known in private life as Mr. Vincent Kaledzi, expressed his deep concern about the safety issues confronting the community. He highlighted the company’s decision to intervene as part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility.

“We have heard the stories of lives lost on this lake—children, parents, and families torn apart by tragedies that could have been prevented. Safety is not a privilege; it is a right. That is why Star Oil has taken it upon itself to ensure that residents of CK Kope, especially the children, can cross the lake safely,” he said.

He further explained that Star Oil’s commitment goes beyond business transactions and profits. “Giving back to society is at the heart of our values. We believe that a safe community is a thriving community. By donating these life jackets, we are investing in lives, in futures, and in the dreams of these children who cross the lake every day to access education,” Torgbui Xornametor emphasised.

Safety First: A Core Company Value

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Star Oil, Mr. Philip Tieku, underscored the company’s focus on safety, not only at their fuel stations but also within the communities they serve.

“At Star Oil, safety is non-negotiable. Whether it is at our stations, on the roads, or the lake, we believe in protecting lives. Our business thrives because of the communities that support us, and it is our duty to give back in ways that matter the most,” Mr Tieku stated.

Mr Tieku urged residents, especially parents and boat operators, to make proper use of the life jackets and ensure they are worn during every trip across the lake. “A life jacket is only effective when it is used. We urge everyone to make it a habit to wear them. The goal is zero drownings, and together, we can achieve that,” he added.

A Community Moved to Gratitude

The residents of CK Kope, overwhelmed with gratitude, lauded Star Oil for its thoughtful intervention. For them, this donation is more than just equipment—it is peace of mind.

Madam Patience Kofi, a parent, expressed her relief: “Every morning, I pray for my children’s safety because crossing the lake is always a risk. With these life jackets, I can breathe a little easier knowing they are protected. God bless Star Oil for thinking of us.”

A Corporate Model for Social Responsibility

Star Oil’s donation to CK Kope is part of a broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy that focuses on safety, education, and community development. The company has been involved in several initiatives across Ghana, from supporting local schools to promoting road safety campaigns.

Torgbui Xornametor, known in private life as Mr Vincent Kaledzi, in his concluding remarks, called on other corporate organisations to prioritise social responsibility and invest in life-saving projects:

“Social responsibility is not a competition; it is a collective effort. Ghana grows stronger when businesses give back. We hope our donation inspires others to step forward and support communities in need,” he said.

A Pledge for Continued Support

Star Oil assured the community that their support would not end with the life jackets. The company promised to conduct periodic safety education sessions to ensure residents understand proper usage and care for the jackets. Additionally, the company hinted at exploring further projects, such as providing safe boats or supporting local health facilities.

Hope on the Horizon

As the ceremony ended, children excitedly wore their new life jackets, their bright colours reflecting both safety and hope. Parents stood by, smiles mixed with tears of gratitude, knowing that their children’s journeys across the lake had become a little safer.

In a world where corporate profits often overshadow community welfare, Star Oil has set a powerful example: that success is most meaningful when shared and that saving lives is the greatest investment of all.

The waters of CK Kope will still ripple with their waves—but from this day forward, they will also carry the echo of a company’s compassion and a community’s hope.
