The newly completed St. Martin’s Memorial Hospital at Odorkor–Accra has been officially commissioned, marking a major step toward improving healthcare accessibility and infrastructure in Ghana.
In his welcome address, the Chief Executive Officer, Seme Mawuli Addom, appealed to government—through the Minister of Health—to extend support to community hospitals by providing additional health workers, similar to the assistance offered to mission and Islamic health facilities.
He emphasised the need for equitable resource allocation to ensure that all health institutions are adequately resourced to deliver quality care.
Officially opening the facility, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, encouraged health workers to treat patients with respect, care, and dignity.
He also highlighted the government’s strides in strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), noting that coverage has reached 60 percent, along with the issuance of free NHIS cards to individuals who were previously not enrolled.
He stressed the need to continue strengthening the scheme to make healthcare more accessible to all Ghanaians and welcomed calls for dialogue on how best the government can support community hospitals to complement national healthcare delivery.

She noted that the commissioning of St. Martin’s Memorial Hospital will expand healthcare access for residents in and around Odorkor while supporting broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s health sector.
She added that such facilities also create job opportunities for many young people within these communities and their surrounding areas.
According to her, witnessing firsthand the transformation these facilities bring to communities has been particularly fulfilling.
As a committed advocate for people-centred development—reflected in various projects across her constituency—she expressed joy in seeing initiatives like this come to fruition.
She emphasised that with quality healthcare and employment opportunities, young people are empowered to work and support their families.
Parents, she said, are better positioned to provide for their households, improve their children’s education, and pursue their own development goals.
All of this, she added, becomes possible with the establishment of a health facility that delivers quality, affordable healthcare while creating jobs for the community.
