The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has officially adopted the finding and recommendations contained in the Amarkai Amartefio Committee’s report.

In a statement on Friday, May 23, the Ministry said ”The Minister has engaged the National Sports Authority on the report and together, have accepted the findings and recommendations of the committee. The recommendations would have therefore be implemented. We entreat the public to look forward to various activities and programmes that would be rolled out in the coming days to implement reforms in line with the committee’s findings.”

On Monday, May 19, 2025, the committee submitted its report on the incidents that led to the death of a Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju in April.

The committee, chaired by Ambassador Major (RTD) Amarkai Amarteifio, was inaugurated by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams (MP) on 8th April 2025 following the unfortunate incident that occurred during a sanctioned boxing match on 29th March at the Bukom Boxing Arena. Olanrewaju collapsed during Fight Night 15 at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on March 9, 2025

Over the course of its work, the committee interviewed eyewitness, medical personnel, sporting officials and reviewed at relevant footages and documentation related to the bout.

Per the Ministry, the committee’s primary objective was to ”ascertain the circumstances surrounding the boxer’s death and to identify any gaps in safety protocols, medical responses, or regulatory compliance.”
