Public frustration is swelling across the country as Ghanaians vent their disappointment over the latest scenes of disorder in Parliament, a development many citizens describe as disgraceful, undignified, and a betrayal of the nation’s democratic values.
On Tuesday, dramatic scenes erupted in Parliament after members of the Minority Caucus vacated their seats and massed at the centre of the chamber. Their protest quickly escalated into pushing, gesturing, shouting, and a brief scuffle, forcing marshals to intervene and halting parliamentary proceedings.
The confrontation stemmed from the contentious declaration of the Kpandai parliamentary seat as vacant — a decision the Minority insists is unlawful and violates due process. They argue that the ruling lacks a constitutional basis and was engineered to tilt the political balance in Parliament.
Following Tuesday’s chaotic confrontation in the chamber, several citizens have spoken out, condemning the behaviour of their elected representatives.
“In fact, I feel embarrassed and ashamed that people described as honourable members are the ones engaging in this kind of activity,” one resident lamented.
“Every one of us is qualified to be in Parliament, but we have given our mandate to these individuals to represent us, to make laws in the interest of citizens and the nation, and look at what’s going on. It’s not right.”
Another young citizen expressed deep disappointment:
“These are leaders we look up to. We expect that when we, the young ones, step in someday, we can hold the mantle with dignity. But when we see them behave this way, it’s very, very disheartening. It is beneath them to show this kind of attitude.”
