Ghanaian comedian Ebenezer Dwomoh has renewed calls for music awards ceremonies in Ghana, particularly the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, to be hosted by a solo comedian to guarantee a better audience experience.
His comments add to similar arguments previously made by fellow comedians OB Amponsah and Lekzy DeComic about the effectiveness of comedians as masters of ceremony at major entertainment events.
Dwomoh took to Facebook on Thursday January 15, 2026 to reignite the conversation, insisting that comedians are best suited to single-handedly host award ceremonies because of their ability to manage tension, improvise and stabilise events when unexpected situations arise.
“The best MC for an award show or any entertainment event is a comedian,” he wrote. “They use jokes to neutralize tension steaming inside nominees and their fanbase so that everyone gets the best of the night whether they win or lose,” he added.
According to him, humour is also essential when things go wrong on stage.
“They also use humour to neutralize the situation when there is a bad performance or technical hitch from production or an accident or incident (gun-pulling lol) on stage and bring the event back to stability as if nothing ever happened,” Ebenezer further noted.
Dwomoh cited international examples to support his position, saying the approach has been proven in countries with well-developed entertainment industries.
“This has been proven over and over again… with Katt Williams and Kevin Hart hosting BET Awards, James Corden hosting Tony Awards, Trevor Noah and Ricky Gervais each hosting the Grammys and Golden Globe 5 times respectively,” he stated.
Ebenezer, also a professional architect stressed that the full value of a comedian can only be realised when they host alone.
“The best can only be sapped out of the comedian if they are the sole host of the event and not a co-host,” he said, intimating that solo hosting has produced “iconic and legendary host performances”.
While acknowledging that pairing a comedian with a non-comedian co-host may look classy and aesthetic, especially if the person is a respected industry figure, Dwomoh argued that such arrangements limit spontaneity.
“However, this inhibits the comedian’s ability to to make improv jokes,” he wrote, explaining that improvisational humour often depends on what has just happened in the room.
He cited comedians such as Clemento Suarez, Lekzy DC, Parrot Mouth, Ato Pagh and Foster Romanus as masters of improv, but noted that timing is often lost when a co-host takes over the microphone.
“When the comedian thinks of a joke and the co-host is already speaking, he/she might have to wait. In this case, the comedian will not be able to come back to the joke… The comedian will just move on and we will never ever here that joke again. Joke no atɔ nsuo mu. Sika no ahye.”
Dwomoh also warned that having two hosts often drags the event, forcing comedians to cut jokes short and defeating the purpose of hiring them in the first place.
“If we are going to have the best TGMA experience, having a solo comic host will not only be an integral part of the event but the best decision the organizers would ever make,” he concluded.
The organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, Charterhouse, have over the years experimented with different hosts and co-hosts for the event. While comedians like Funny Face, Foster Romanus and a few otthers have served the purpose in the past, there has not been a solo comic host yet at Ghana’s premiere music awards scheme.
