SML’s founder is an independent entrepreneur, not a political proxy – Lawyer rebuts OSP’s claims

The lawyer for Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML), Cephas Boyuo, has rejected the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) allegations that the company’s founder, Evans Adusei, was used as a proxy for political patronage or illicit enrichment.

Speaking to the press in defence of his client, Boyuo said the OSP’s assertions were “baseless and unfair,” stressing that Adusei is a self-made businessman with a long-standing track record across multiple industries.

“The claim ignores verifiable documentation and business records demonstrating that Adusei is an independent and long-established Ghanaian entrepreneur,” Boyuo said.

“This is somebody who has been doing so well. He’s a self-made person.”

According to the lawyer, the creation of SML in 2017 was a “natural diversification step” by Adusei, who has decades of experience in logistics, trade, and industrial systems. He explained that the businessman’s credibility, capital base, and operational history predate his involvement in technology-driven revenue assurance services.

“His credibility is backed by existing entities such as Evans Timbers Limited and Evatex Logistics Limited,” Boyuo noted, adding that Adusei’s ventures have consistently demonstrated “industrial compliance and operational success.”

He detailed Adusei’s business journey, saying he began his entrepreneurial career in 1988 as a bulk importer of used clothes from Europe and the United States before transitioning into timber processing and afforestation in the mid-1990s.

“Evans Timbers Limited doesn’t just process timber — it also finishes and exports its own products,” Boyuo stated.

“Adusei is documented among the few large-scale private contributors to forest regeneration programmes and owns perhaps the biggest teak plantation in Ghana.”

He further revealed that in 2003, Adusei established Evatex Logistics Company Limited, a firm specialising in mining support services, heavy equipment supply, and stockpiling operations. The company, he said, has provided services to major multinational mining firms, including WBHO South Africa, Newmont Ghana Limited, Gold Fields Ghana Limited, and AngloGold Ashanti.

“Long before SML’s creation, Mr. Adusei had already built an established industrial and logistical footprint,” the lawyer stressed.

“To suggest that such a person is a political proxy is simply sad. We don’t do this to ourselves.”

The OSP recently alleged that SML’s founder was a beneficiary of political favouritism linked to the controversial revenue assurance contract with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

However, SML and its representatives continue to maintain that the company operates independently and in compliance with Ghana’s procurement and business laws.
