The Chairman of Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, Ernest Yaw Anim, has called on Ghanaians to eschew all forms of electoral violence and election-related malfeasance in order to safeguard the country’s democratic gains, uphold human rights, and achieve sustainable development.

Mr Anim, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Kumawu, made these remarks in the wake of disturbances that marred the Ablekuma North electoral rerun across 19 polling stations on Friday, 11 July 2025.

He described such incidents as a serious affront to Ghana’s democratic credentials and a breach of both domestic and international legal frameworks.

He cited Article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which enshrine the right to life, liberty, and security of person—rights that are imperilled by acts of electoral violence.

Mr Anim further urged the Government, political parties, security agencies, the National Peace Council, and the Electoral Commission to collaboratively establish a robust electoral management framework to forestall future violent occurrences.

Commending the Ghana Police Service for its decision to investigate the police commander who assaulted a journalist during the incident, the Kumawu MP condemned the act and reaffirmed the commitment of the Human Rights Committee to speak out against all violations of rights, freedoms, and human dignity in Ghana.
