Renowned businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has partnered with a local initiative to provide essential food aid to vulnerable residents of Adaboya-Kunkoe in the Bongo District of Upper East Region.

The donation, consisting of 35 bags of maize, was distributed on Monday, April 28 to dozens of women in the farming community.

Approximately 70 elderly individuals, primarily widows, single mothers, and persons unable to farm due to illness or disability, benefited from the gesture.

The community, largely dependent on subsistence agriculture, has faced mounting challenges due to erratic and insufficient rainfall in recent years, leading to poor yields and heightened food insecurity.

This intervention was therefore intended to supplement dwindling food supplies.

Mrs Janet Abugre, a native of Adaboya-Kunkoe and coordinator of the annual donation initiative, told the media that Alhaji Agongo’s support had significantly expanded their outreach this year, enabling them to assist a greater number of families.

“What began as an effort to support around 20 individuals has now grown to reach approximately 70 beneficiaries, thanks to Alhaji Agongo’s generous contribution,” Mrs Abugre remarked.

Although the distribution customarily takes place in June each year, coinciding with the planting season in the Upper East Region, it was carried out earlier this year, offering timely relief to community members grappling with food shortages exacerbated by inconsistent rainfall and declining harvests.

Ensuring access to vital nutrition

Recipients expressed heartfelt appreciation for the donation, which was handed out at a neutral location to ensure all could receive assistance with dignity and free from stigma.

“We provide food rather than cash to ensure that households have access to vital nutrition,” Mrs Abugre explained, adding that each bag of maize was shared among three beneficiaries to maximise the impact.

Alhaji Agongo, an Accra-based entrepreneur noted for his philanthropic engagements across Ghana, has once again demonstrated his enduring commitment to uplifting marginalised communities through this collaboration, continuing a longstanding tradition of giving back to society, Mrs Abugre added.

While this year’s gesture has brought significant relief, Mrs Abugre acknowledged that the needs of the community remain considerable, with many vulnerable individuals still requiring aid.

She expressed optimism that more benefactors, such as Alhaji Agongo, would continue to support the initiative in the years to come.
