Commuters along the vital road linking Sarpeiman, Pobiman, and Amasaman were paralysed today (November 4) as hundreds of infuriated residents staged a massive demonstration, demanding the immediate construction of a footbridge to end a frightening spate of pedestrian accidents.
The protestors, drawn from Sarpeiman, Pobiman, and several adjoining communities within the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, accused government authorities of criminal neglect, claiming repeated appeals for a pedestrian crossing have been ignored, resulting in preventable injuries.

The demonstration highlights a severe infrastructure deficit on the busy stretch, where the absence of a dedicated foot crossing has turned the main thoroughfare into a deadly obstacle course.
According to community leaders, the road, which links high-density residential areas to major commercial and administrative centres like Amasaman, records “frequent accidents” involving pedestrians.
Victims include vulnerable groups such as schoolchildren attempting to cross during peak hours.
Holding placards with slogans demanding swift government intervention, the protestors vented their frustration, arguing that their fundamental right to safe passage has been violated.
The demonstrators’ core demand remains the same: the construction of a footbridge to ensure absolute pedestrian safety along the stretch.
The protest underscores the critical need for a safety audit and prioritisation of pedestrian infrastructure in rapidly developing urban and peri-urban centres like the Ga West Municipality.
The communities are now demanding immediate commitment and clear timelines from the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ga West Municipal Assembly to avert further loss of life and injury.
Failure to act, they warn, will only intensify their action against the perceived “neglect of their plight”.
