Award-winning Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur Sarkodie has announced plans to host a writing camp as part of a new partnership to relaunch a full label service, similar to his Sarkcess Music initiative.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with NY DJ on BTM Afrika, the multi-award-winning artist reflected on the difficulties of signing and managing musicians in Ghana and explained why he had previously stepped away from running a label.
“When you sign an artist, you’re technically almost responsible for their life. It’s not supposed to be like that, but that’s what it is, especially where we’re from in Ghana. It is interesting how people can face worse situations and wouldn’t have to complain, yet you have to take the blame for everything that happens in their personal life once you’re around,” Sarkodie said.
Despite those challenges, the rapper said he remains committed to nurturing new talent and shaping the next generation of stars.
“That, however, doesn’t mean I’m not going to help. I get fulfilled when I see something and bring it to light. I moved away from signing artists because of how fully I have to be involved, but we just had a new partnership where we’re about to start a full label service again, like how we did Sarkcess Music, so we’re still looking for talent,” he added.
Sarkodie revealed that he already has his eyes on a few artists but would not disclose their names until agreements are finalised.
“I have my eyes on a few, but I’m not going to mention any names until we’re able to get them involved and have the business side sorted,” he noted.
As part of the initiative, Sarkodie confirmed plans to hold a writing camp, which he described as a more organic approach to discovering authentic talent.
“I’m doing a writing camp. I’ll put the date out. That’s a nice way for me to spot talents, because then we spend time together so I can know the work ethic, vocal ability, star power and more,” he said.
This new direction marks Sarkodie’s return to talent development, echoing the role Sarkcess Music once played in elevating musicians such as Strongman and Akwaboah.
